Extended Graphics Array (AbkΓΌrzung XGA) bezeichnet sowohl einen Typ Grafikkarte, der von IBM im Oktober 1990cite-ref-announce-1-0[1] fΓΌr die IBM-PS/2-Serie von Computern eingefΓΌhrt wurde (XGA Display Adapter/A), als auch den dazugehΓΆrigen Grafikstandard.
Neben dem ursprΓΌnglichen XGA Display Adapter/A stellte IBM auΓerdem den Γ€hnlichen XGA-2 Display Adapter/A her, der eine hΓΆhere erreichbare Farbtiefe ermΓΆglichte.

Technik
Die XGA-Hardware war abwΓ€rtskompatibel zum Grafikstandard VGA, der 8514/A-Treiber-Schnittstelle und bot auΓerdem einen 132-Spalten-Textmodus (ΓΌblich waren 40 und 80).cite-ref-videosubsystem-2-0[2] Die maximale BildauflΓΆsung betrug 1024 Γ 768 Bildpunkte, die maximale Farbtiefe 16 Bit (65.536 Farben). Diese Maximalwerte konnten zwar aus SpeichergrΓΌnden nicht gleichzeitig erreicht werden, mit einer Erweiterung des Grafikspeichers waren jedoch 256 Farben bei 1024 Γ 768 Bildpunkten mΓΆglich, bzw. 65.536 Farben bei 800 Γ 600 Bildpunkten.cite-ref-3[3]cite-ref-4[4] Der Framebuffer ist bei XGA-Grafikkarten direkt ansprechbar, so dass ihre Hardware theoretisch jede Kombination aus AuflΓΆsung und Farbtiefe liefern kann, sofern der Grafikspeicher dazu ausreicht.cite-ref-videosubsystem-2-1[2] Sie besitzen β anders als bei normalem VGA und analog zu 8514/A β hardwarebeschleunigte Zeichenbefehle und Cursor-Darstellung.
